Over the centuries the Royal Navy has enhanced the naturally occurring harbour by building protective piers to create one of the largest harbours in the world.

Now protected by English Heritage, the fort didn't actually see action until the Civil War and was converted to a private residence during its lifetime.

The harbour was sold by the Royal Navy in 1996 and now supports extensive water sports facilities which will be used for the 2012 Olympics.
