I’m Allister Freeman, a professional Surrey wedding photographer with many years’ experience of weddings in Surrey, the UK and Europe. My photography has led me to photograph couples across a variety of cultures and faiths and in all kinds of interesting locations - from the traditional to the downright quirky and everything in between.

Surrey - the dark horse of the home counties. I don’t think Surrey is talked about enough in comparison to some of its neighbouring counties, characterised by their rolling hills and desirable closeness to the capital. Surrey, in fact, has just as much to offer in the way of quaint English villages, vast woodland, striking stately homes, and vibrant towns - something to suit all wedding tastes.

Just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of London, you can find yourself in the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. A well-known trail for cyclists, horse-riders and walkers, this rural playground has inspired artists and writers alike for many years.

And it’s not difficult to understand why, when you look out from a viewpoint at the top of the hill to some of the most magnificent views of the south’s green pastures, Surrey is a wedding photographers’ dream.

Documentary Approach

Unknown to many, Surrey is a leading county in British wines, and there are some charming vineyards to get lost in (and to get married in!). The most famous of vineyards is arguably Denbies in Dorking, slap bang in the middle of the Surrey Hills. You can celebrate your day surrounded by over 250 acres of vineyard. Make your entrance under the white pillars of the courtyard, dine in a glass-topped conservatory and the night away in one of the wine cellars. What a unique day that would be, and what an eclectic range of shots you could have in your wedding album!

Surrey Wedding Venues

Henry VIII owned as many as 11 houses in Surrey, and so as you can imagine, Surrey is a county with the stately home at its core. I have had the pleasure of photographing weddings at several grand estates, as you can see in my Surrey wedding photographer galleries below. Langshot Manor, the 16th century home with it’s darkly lit winding staircases and its own moat encircling the property is a cosy and intimate choice, where Woldingham School is set in 700 acres of land, with all the space you could possibly ask for to accommodate your wedding guests. A school? Certainly not the first location you’d think of for a wedding.

But that’s probably because you’re picturing your own secondary school with it’s dated hallways and grey exterior. Quite the opposite, Woldingham, the oldest girls schools in the country, is a truly magnificent red-brick mansion, sitting peacefully in a picturesque valley between Surrey and Kent. The driveway to the venue alone will have you gasping and it really is an incredible venue to host your Surrey wedding… it’s also a truly beautiful spot for wedding photography.

Reportage AKA Documentary Surrey Wedding Photographer

Many of Surrey's country houses and barns don’t offer a lot in the way of light, and can often be dark and moody. Whilst your typical Surrey wedding photographer will see this as a hindrance, it’s where my approach to creating wedding photos thrives. Taking advantage of the natural light and the intricate details of these very old and rustic buildings can produce some of the most stunning wedding photographs.

The combination of the wedding venue and the moments captured between you and your wedding guests is what drives my style of natural photography, often called ‘reportage’ or ‘documentary wedding photography’. I aim to tell a story through photos, and what better story to capture than a wedding day, all the intimate moments, against a once in a lifetime backdrop.

All wedding photographers have their own unique style and approach to creating photos and, as a reportage style wedding photographer, I focus more on documenting real moments during the various stages of a wedding day. The end result is a collection of pictures that accurately depict the atmosphere and emotion of the celebration, authentically.
